What are the advantages of "Continuing Medical Education" (CME)?

• Starting in 2004, physicians in Germany are obliged to update their know-how on a regular basis. Over a period of 5 years, physicians must provide evidence that they have attended at least 250 hours of medical education. Continuing Medical Education (CME) events and other qualified means are certified by physician organizations or medical societies; this accreditation guarantees neutrality and high quality medical education.
  
• In the US, physicians have been required to participate in CME for decades; this system is well established in the US and some European countries and has proven to be very effective.
  
• The development of a similar system is under way in most European countries.
